about

Folk-punk troubadour Bryan McPherson’s immersion in Occupy Oakland in 2011 was a life-changing experience that informed his forthcoming dynamic third album, Wedgewood, due out Summer 2015. In between playing shows on “Teargas Tuesday” and dodging rubber bullets in the name of change at Occupy, he began to collate and catalog the inspiration for his latest offering. His songs meld Americana, folk, alternative, and punk into one incendiary, incisive sound - paying homage to influences such as Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, The Violent Femmes, Bruce Springsteen and Ani DiFranco.

Aiming to preserve the spirit of defiance and freedom, he retreated to Flying Whale Studios in Northern California in 2013. On the old Arrowhead goldmine in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Bryan cut himself off from the outside world for four months to self-produce the album. He holed up in a small hut on a friend’s ranch in the mountains just as winter began, and found that the rugged, isolated setting immensely impacted the music. In fact the album title reflects the brand of the stove in the hut: Wedgewood.

“Since it was freezing, I lit the wood-burning stove every day, which brought smoke, fire, and warmth into the recording process. Resultantly there’s a recurring theme of fire on the record,” Bryan shares. Wedgewood has a buildup, a climax, and a resolution - much like a fire. What happens when wood rubs against wood? It creates friction, and that friction creates fire.”

The album opens with first single “Born On A Highway” that starts with a vocal intro by his young nieces then rolls along on stark instrumentation and Bryan’s potent and powerful cadence. “It’s about the journey as a singer and traveling,” he says. “It discusses where the road takes you, and what it means to be a human being.”

“Here We Go” is a call-to-action for revolutionaries with its sharp lyrics and vibrant instrumentation, while “Hearts in Boxcars” depicts a strained love story of two people who must go in different directions because that’s where their lives are diverging. The expansive “Song From The Moon” illuminates the breadth of Wedgewood with its “revolutionary characters, the revolution of religion, and the revolution of spirituality,” Bryan asserts.

Touring year-round, Bryan has hit the road many times with punk luminaries Dropkick Murphys, he’s opened for the legendary Chuck Berry and boasts a fan in Slash. He’s received much critical acclaim, with the San Francisco Bay Guardian praising, “His words aren’t just cerebral ponderings about the state of the government. It is one man belting—at the top of his lungs—his honest, emotional impressions of the world.”

Bryan’s got something to say loud and clear. He explains, “I see music as a means for change. It’s a powerful and beautiful force, and it’s my life. I’m here to remind you with Wedgewood that we’re all stronger than we know.”

Track Name: Born on a Highway
Born on a Highway

Some of us are alright
Some of us are OK
Some of us are the night
Some of us are afraid
Some of us come to run
Some of us come to play
Some of us are all heart
And some are decay

Born on a highway
Born on a highway

She came to this world
With her fists in the air
In the middle of Kansas
In the middle of somewhere
But everyday she had to get out
Some of us come lost
We gotta get found

Born on a highway

And here I stand
On Magnolia
In a strange land
That I'm not of
And where I go
Remains to be seen
But I'm a willing participant
In an incredible dream

Born on a highway
Track Name: Days of Rage
Days of Rage

I seen Jesus in a skid row bum
I saw Buddha on highway 1
I've seen Mohammad on the run
And I took 7,000 Hindu Gods because I couldn't pick one

I've seen David Koresh burning down
I've seen London Bridge and Newtowne
People in the streets with fog in their eyes
Freedom reach for blinded skies
Fists clenched in blood with Occupied signs
Beaten and broken by the FBI
Calling America The Homeland reminds me of the Nazis
The Soviet Union Stalin and Liberace
Playing games up in heaven
Monopoly and Yahtzee
And we're all stars in this age of digitized paparazzi

I won't be afraid of the days of rage
inside
it's justified
And I won't be afraid of the fascist brigade
You fall in line
With freedom lies

And I've seen the apocalypse explode at the local mall
With Ken and Barbie people dolls
Melting in plastic with bubbling skies
Microwaved revolution American Pie
Thanksgiving was robbed for Christmas songs of dollar
But Thanksgiving was just a song to cover up the slaughter
So I really can't complain to liberty's daughter
She's been kidnapped on a train from yesterday to tomorrow

Chorus

Well I see they've made a movie out of Osama Bin Laden
Well they made a movie out of a movie to show to all the zombies
And I'm the last true soldier in the land of the dead
But I think my days are numbered, they'll surely have my head
There's no freedom of speech in the land of the sheep
And if you really want the news then look to the streets
In the sidewalk and the sand, the cracks and disasters
Pawns in the hand of the propaganda of the masters
And we bleed the blood of the workers of the world
We toil and labor and hand over the pearls
In a broken system the snake will eat itself
How can I go to heaven if I'm living in hell
Track Name: Dark Hearts
Dark Hearts

Don't you worry it'll be alright
Hold me close in the morning light
Everyday comes after night
We don't go down without a fight
We were playing god on the avenue
Slinging dope running from the boys in blue
But every jungle has it's rules
For the lions and the fools
'Cause down here you run to get away
Chasing wolves in this jungle parade
Down there I played from my heart
And we were playing in the dark

And we are dark hearts
We are

I heard Ricky got locked up again
Lucky if you end up in a detox bed
Chasing dreams in the eye of a needle
I'd like to watch them all just burn
My boy Biz he ended up dead
everybody knows why he just up and left
I don't know why I'm alive
and my friends had to die
'cause down here you run to get away
Chasing ghosts in this graveyard parade
Down there I played from my heart
Yea we were playing in the dark

Chorus

And them days are never coming back
I see 'em now in the smoke stacks
The tree is gone and the sky is cracked
And we were singing in the black
We were all playing this silly game
Running riot on a red line train
Running right in to the pain
And we were running from the rain
and I don't think I'll ever get away
Chasing hope in this basement parade
Down there I speak from my heart
And I'm gonna leave it in the dark

Chorus
Track Name: Hearts in Boxcars
Hearts in Boxcars

I wanted to be anyone but me
I'm on the beach and it's dawn singing along
To the tide coming in
We sing or we swim
And the birds call my name
It's time to fly away
So take my hand
We're well on our way
And all that we've got is all that remains
There's one thing I know
It's never too far
It's a winding road
For hearts in Boxcars

Near and far we are made of stars
We are hearts in boxcars
Boxcar
Boxcar

When the days turn to night
And the nights turn to weeks
And the only voice I've got stutters to speak
The meaning and the truth
Of me and you
Of us and them
Beginning and end
So long my friend
Broken hearts do mend
We're deeper than these scars
We're hearts in boxcars

Near and far we are tracks and scars
We are hearts in boxcars
Boxcar
Boxcar (it's all I know)

I'm on top of the hill
With lightening in hand
Life's made of metal
For a weatherman
And it's all coming down
We will find our way
'Cuz every storm falls on a sunny day
So take my hand we're well on our way
And all that we've got is all that remains
And there's one thing I know
It's never too far
It's a winding road for hearts in boxcars

Near and far we are made of stars
We are hearts in boxcars
Boxcar
Boxcar (It's all I know)

It's all I know
It's all I know
It's all I know...
Track Name: Song From The Moon
Song From The Moon

The song comes in the evening
When the sun is leaving
And the sky cries solid black tears
Of solid youth and years
And the lines upon my face
Staring at the footsteps them footsteps that we trace
So Jesus take my hand
Jesus take my soul
God is for the young and the Devil's for the old
But somewhere in between this lifetime and this dream
I'm alive on an upside down cross of light

Seeing books of rhyme
Buried deep inside my mind
In all the mountains and the streams
And all the footsteps on these streets
And you know that everything is dead
And everything bleeds
And the whores dress in red
With the apostles on their knees
So miracle my nightmare
Drop heaven from the sky
Give me eternal lightening
Because God is you and I

Its apocalyptic sunrise
Blood between the sheets
A tumbling highrise
An Arabian Spring
So let's be born again
Suffering in this womb
This is just an endless impending sort of doom
And it always ends too soon
The hills swallow the moon
It's the last bit of sunlight
Buried in a tomb
And no “there is no spoon”
There's no point to it all
You can read it in your bible
You can sing it in your psalm
And it'll rain a fiery hell on the last day of your life
Killing all your children
And fucking all your wives
So sing it from our souls
Of our cosmic plight
We all live in blackness and we're staring into light
I'm upside down in gravity
Dancing on a sphere
It's a universal challenge
Where nothing is clear
So give me all your hate
Give me all your rage
Give me all your love
Clasping razors when you pray
I'm swimming in these words
Bending in this time
Suffocating wading through your world made up of lies

Lies... lie lie lie lies...

Leave me your illusion
Let it fertilize and grow
It's a slavery plantation
Harvesting our souls
So stand for revolution
Or die here in your seat
Try running when they come for you
They're never taking me
And “you'll only kill a man”
The idea will just live on
In an oral tradition
Of poetry and song
And we are the abandoned pilgrims
Waking up inside this mind
It's such a mystery of who the hell am I
Somewhere there are answers
But me I am so small
It's a one way conversation with a God so God damned tall
And can you even hear me?
Can you hear my voice?
Is there free will or just a double sided coin?
And pretending there is chance
On this road that goes nowhere
We are all the victims of domesticating fear
And we are all the stars brightening the night
On an infinite collision between wrong and right
And we are all the atoms of a digital age
We are Simulacra
We are masters we are slaves
I am indignation
I'm a rat I am a sage
I am just an actor and this world is just my stage
And I'm dressed in this skin
Covering this heart
'Cause inside I am nothing
Inside I am dark
Track Name: Here We Go
Here We Go

Here we go it'll rain fire

It's a worldwide riot watch the teargas coming down
Raining like a hell parade on Oakland town
Streets of Laredo
The wild wild west
We are the streets no police
from here to Budapest

Chorus

Let's all have a little Egypt for your Syrian suns
Free Palestine and Israel
Rubber bullets real bombs
We are the people
We are the world
We are your sons
We are your girls
We are North Korea
Tiananmen Square
We are the sick and dying making ourselves clear

Chorus

It's a corporation slavery state
Invisible to your eye
We're born into bondage
And worked until we die
But someday we'll have freedom
The world can rise up
We'll reach the sky
If you don't give up
So papa watch the sunlight
The nights coming down
No job no hope
The King stole the crown
Born and raised in Brooklyn
Where you land on your feet
In the other side of the skyline
Where the bricks meet the streets
So come on start a riot
In every single town
'Cause every once in a while you gotta just burn it down

Chorus

I'll sit up on the hill and watch it all burn away
Another atomic skyline in Californ I A
It's a missionary position
The T.V.'s on the lawn
The government wants the internet
Iran wants the bomb
Our senators are the Hitlers
'Cause they'll lock us all away
Bill of Rights burnt up right
AmeriKa
M.I.A.
Track Name: Kelly Thomas
Kelly Thomas

Who has a song for the homeless killed in the street
By the police
beat that man like meat
No I can't breathe
Oh no I can not breathe

Who has a song for Kelly that we can all scream
While he bleeds on my internet screen
Oh oh he's not me
Oh no he's not me

Who has a song for the forgotten when they die
For an old mother cries to an empty sky
There's no moon tonight
There's no moon tonight

You don't care about Kelly 'cause he ain't you
Broke them bones right through
The Orange County crew
They beat him blue
They beat him blue

Who has justice for the men that they just set free
Yea these so called police
Manny Ramos ain't me
Jay Cicinelli
Oh no you're not me

And Kelly Thomas lays cold in the ground
Silent nights make no sound
Not Guilty they found
In Fullerton town
Track Name: Bullets and Blues
Bullets and Blues

Remember when this was new
And everything we'd do was fun
Livin' on the run
Livin' on the run
Them days are gone
And so is this song
It's ringing in our ears
But not for long
No not for long

I got bullets and blues
Blues
Bullets and blues
Blues

I'm just a heart attack
And I'm looking back
At these lifetimes made of ash
'Cause we're the burning flame
We're endless change
Nothing remains
No nothing remains the same
It's all gone
Its all gone
Everyone but you

Chorus

I miss The East Coast
I miss the D train
I must of lost hope
On a crashing airplane
And its sink or swim
When you're born again in this
Ocean made of tears
Swimming through the years
and its' all gone
and it's all gone
Everyone but you

Chorus
Track Name: Wasted World
Wasted World

Here comes a rider from a distant land
Six shooter and a black armband
He says the war ain't over
And the waters all run dry
And we're all gonna fry
In the light like ghosts
And she's hanging her clothes
With a letter she wrote
In the back of some bone yard
And kids play in the street
The bombs blew off their feet
And they crawl all day

In a wasted world

And the dreams that you once had
You'll never have
It'll all go black
There's no good and there's no bad
And there's no sad
It'll all go black

Chorus

Here comes a rider from a distant land
Six shooter and a black armband
He says the war ain't over
And the waters all run dry
And we're all gonna fry
In the light like ghosts
And she's hanging from a rope
With a letter she wrote
In the back of some bone yard
Kids play in the street
the bombs blew off their feet
And they cry all day

Chorus
Track Name: Burn it Down
Burn it Down

Better life
You better run
Fading fast in the morning sun
Broken bottles
Broken dreams
Burning down these
London streets

Tired eyes
Gonna let them sleep
Got a secret I can't keep
I'm a demon
I'm a beast
I'm rising in The East

We got rock
We got roll
We're gonna save our souls
Thy kingdom come
Thy kingdom go
let's sit back and watch the whole thing blow

Burn it down

Burning skies
Rivers of blood
Jesus Christ was the God of Sun
Are you getting high
Can you give me some
I need some bullets for my love
Let's kill 'em all and make them bleed
Scratch their eyes so they can't see
We are all one destiny
Erasing history

Battle lines are being drawn
Sing 'em now
Revolution song
This is our time
And our time is now
So lets all go burn the whole thing down

Burn it down

Beasts of England
Beasts of Ireland
Beasts of every land and tribe
Castles crumble
Buildings tumble
Everything that lives some day will die

“Living in The Red”

It's not all in my head
Not all in my head
Not all in my head
t's not all in my head
Not all in my head
Not all in my head
Not all in my head
Watch the world go dead
Watch the world go dead
Watch the world go dead
Watch the world go dead
Watch the world go dead
Track Name: Oh Darlin'
Oh Darlin'

I'm a cold and lonley sea
Under star company
I've got a brand new name
I'm different and you're all the same
So cover your eyes from the sun
Shine fire from above
Now I'm brighter than anyone

Oh Darlin'
Oh Darlin'

I'm an orphan at your window
And I'm the coldness in your soul
I'm a black bird serenade
When your moonlight falls away
And all that I see is love
It's the answer for everyone
And I'm a towering tower undone

I'm over these western hills
And I'm sea bound for an eastern chill
Somewhere in darkness night
There's a fire and there's a candle light
And all that I see is you
Your the flame that I'm running to
To carry carry me through

Oh Darlin'
Oh Darlin'
